Titeln är en sammansättning av grekiskans οὐ (inte), och τόπος (plats), med andra ord  Boken Utopia av Thomas More utkom 1516. I den berättar författaren hur han möter en portugisisk skeppare som under sina resor i Nya Världen hamnat i landet  23 I samma anda skrev den brittiske filosofen Thomas More en hel bok om Utopia (och myntade termen).
